Kihei is a pretty safe area to visit, but there are safety concerns anywhere, so it’s a good idea to always be aware of your surroundings. The biggest safety hazards tend to be on the beaches and in the water. It’s a good idea to read all the warning signs carefully, and heed the advice given on them. Things like sharks, jelly fish, strong currents and waves, sharp coral, and drop-offs can usually be avoided by paying attention to signs and bulletin board postings. There are lifeguards on most of the public beaches from around eight in the morning to five or six in the afternoon. They are trained to handle pretty much any emergency that might arise in the vicinity, and the police patrol pretty regularly.

As with any area, no matter how safe, be careful walking at night, avoid areas that are poorly lit, and try to keep at least one other person with you at all times. If you do go off by yourself, tell someone where you’re going, and keep your cell phone with you, just in case. The crime rate in Kihei is not very high, but it’s still a good idea to be cautious - lock your hotel/condo doors, leave any flashy jewelry at home, and keep your wallet in a safe place away from potential pickpockets.
