Lima, Peru, and its environs are a treasure trove of ancient history. Archaeological sites contain ruins of the Incas and other previous societies. Some museums display the artifacts. Spanish colonial times and more recent history are represented by churches, government buildings and historic houses. Among Lima's museums is one devoted to the Inquisition. Crowded downtown Lima is surrounded by neighborhoods ranging from shantytowns to beachfront areas with upscale shopping, dining and lodging.
