“Nice hotel”

Sofitel Philadelphia

Aug 26, 2008

Stayed at the Sofitel at the end of July for three nights, while on business in Philly. Hotel is very comfortable and, as has been stated within other reviews, the rooms are spacious with great beds! The walk in showers are also a plus. I had an issue on my first night due to a foul smell in the room (drains or air con), when the problem was raised with the front desk they were very apologetic and placed me in a suite on the top floor, so that can't be bad. I booked the hotel on the hotel website and paid for the business premium that included breakfast and other bits and bobs like ironing and free internet, if you wanted it. This worked out to be good value as colleagues paid for room only and with breakfast it worked out more than the business rate

The restaurant area for breakfast and dinner is very good and the service excellent. The hotel has a gym, which has a number of CV machines and a couple of weight units plus free weights, if required. The gym was well kept and had fruit, water and towels available if required. If you forget the Ipod, there are head sets with disposable "foam" ear pieces, if required. There is music and TV on the machines.

The bar area is comfortable and they do good snack food to consume with the beer, if you are hungry!

The hotel is in a great location for eating, shopping and generally walking around.

Over all, the staff, comfort and environment were very good and I would recommend the hotel to colleagues. I would stay there again, if on business or holiday.

“Great experience at this top notch hotel”

I'll start with a small qualifier: I didn't pay for my stay here (work did), so I might be slightly less enthusiastic if I had had to pay the steep rates. Yet, it seems the amenities and service match the price.

The service was all top notch. Maids come twice a day, concierge is very friendly and other staff are helpful. The amenties we used included the gym and the business center. The former was clean and each of the cardio machines had its own TV for which they provided disposable foam pads for the headphones if you didn't bring your own. They have a basket or two of apples, plus a variety of sizes of medicines balls, circuit training machines and weights. The business center is actually just three computers and a printer in an alcove near the bar, but I appreciated the easy access and the free printing. Like all upscale hotels, they charge a ridiculous amount for in-room internet, so this is a perfect alternative.

The rooms are lovely and large. The beds are awesome - they have a pillow top that's like a foot thick, but the mattress underneath is still fairly firm (so the best of both worlds!). Spacious closets (although I like drawers as compared to shelves - there was no "dresser") and the bathroom was spacious and beautiful as well. In the entryway to the room, they have a console table, which is really handy to drop your purse and etc. when you walk in. There's also a small seating area with a coffee table and a desk. They give you two free (albeit tiny) water bottles per day.

The location is ideal, in beautiful Rittenhouse Square area, next to a lot of fabulous restaurants (Tria, Matyson and Vetri are must tries and even closer are the renowned Alma de Cuba and Le Bec-Fin) and shopping. Not far from the subway lines.

I was very pleased with our experience here!

    • Liked — The bed and the location
    • Disliked — Not sure if they use "green practices" i.e. not changing sheets and towels every 5 minutes, etc. If they do, they should put a little sign to promote it, like lots of hotels do! If they don't, that's the one thing I would change...

“Disappointing”

Booked 2 rooms for a 2 night stop-over on the way to LA, chosen based on Trip Advisor reviews.

Whilst this was one of the best and well appointed hotels we stayed in during our holiday, that was expected and there were too many problems and niggles to rate it any higher.

Main problem was confusion with the booking. Having trailed our jet-lagged selves around the sights of Philly and returned to our rooms around 5 pm, my sons (in the twin room) received a phone call from reception - if we were staying another night, they would be happy to take our payment.

As this had already been booked, vouchers handed over, etc, I had to drag myself down to reception to sort out, which they did do (front desk staff were polite to the point of obseqiousness). All sorted out ok but good job they weren't full; shocking administration.

Rooms were huge, generally clean, but I was able write on the dust on the window cill. Bathroom was spacious and well-equipped, but with a stupid double-door arrangement. Too many of the 'style' statements lacked basic practicality and didn't add up to much 'style' in any event. Lack of tea/coffee making a minus although there was coffee from the restaurant/cafe in the morning.

Our double bed was huge but had some sort of mattress pad which had 'memory' - or was just too soft - and was horrible for those like me who turn around a bit during the night. Give me a good, firm mattress any day. Also (and not alone) was the 'fashion' of tons of cushion, pillows, which when reduced to the basics left you with a small pillow which your head fell off when you turned over. Campaign for Proper Pillows starts here!

Public spaces - bar, restaurant, etc - seemed limited, there was a lawyers convention one night and a wedding reception the next which limited space for hotel guests.

Good location, close to shops, bars restaurants.

Not as good as we hoped or expected.

“Sofiterrible”

Sofitel Philadelphia

I booked a one night stay with my husband and baby at the Hotel Sofitel on the recommendation of the previous reviewers here at Trip Advisor. I've never been steered wrong with the advice, except this time.

I booked a higher rate for a king sized bedroom, complete with breakfast and a late checkout. I anticipated a relaxing stay.

The bedroom was not bright and modern (with the exception of the huge HDTV), but rather like a retrofitted older room. The bed was a california king, not king bed, and had a lumpy, off kilter pillowtop on top of the mattress. We soon realized why - the bed springs were so off line that the left side of the bed sank far lower than the right!

There is no pool at the hotel. A disappointment.

There was no water in the room.

Cafe at the hotel was empty. Mussels marinere, which I had hopes for being in a french establishment, were the tiniest little mussels I've seen. No wonder the dish was only $13.

I asked the front desk for recommendations on patisseries, hoping for a bit of quaintness and cafe in the morning. They sent me down behind the hotel to a small bakery with lousy croissants, no customers, and day old bread for sale.

I asked the front desk for walking directions to Liberty Bell. He sent us down the narrow Chestnut Street, so as tourists we could regale in the ugliness of boarded store fronts, pawn shops, homeless people. Not a bright one at the front desk.

I valeted my car. Be aware, I was there for business and called for my car expecting a 5, maybe 10 minute turnaround. 25 minutes later the car comes up and I'm late for my meeting. On exit, we decided - not again, we will call down 1/2 an hour before so we won't have to wait for the car in the heat. The bellman ends up taking the wrong info off my ticket, and we wait again regardless.

There were a few bright spots. A lovely bar, kind waitstaff at the restaurant, complimentary coffee/tea at breakfast, decent sized gym. I have stayed at sofitels before but after this experience, I think I will stay elsewhere.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — nothing
    • Disliked — valet incompetent, slow. front desk staff should pay more attention to direct traffic to the nicer areas in town, and warn about the shadier areas. my husband went to rittenhouse with our 6 month old, and caught teens smoking pot in broad daylight!
