I booked my reservation a week beforehand for the 4th of July week. Found one on Priceline.com for $149/night. I decided to go with this hotel based on all the great review from this site! I am so glad I did not stay anywhere else- the location was fabulous! It was in a nice, safe, historical part of town. I was researching hotels in City Hall, near the Convention Center and I am so glad I did not stay there, as it looked too chaotic!
The best feature of the Sheraton is its location. It is walking distance of the historical district, Penn's Landing and South Street. I felt safe walking the streets after dark, which was important to me. There are several nice restaurants around, including, City Tavern and Bookbinders (pricey). We visited Positano Coast, an open-air restaurant directly across the street, for a glass of wine and a cheese plate after touring one night. They had tables with little comfy sofas- felt like you were in the Carribean! Had a fabulous waiter named Nick.
I read alot of the Trip Advisor reviews before I went and yes, the middle elevator does take a while (just hit the close button!). I parked my car at the parking garage other reviewers talked about- only $18 a night compared to $28 valet at the hotel. There were no spots available on the streets (some due to 4th of July) but would not want to take my chances getting a ticket.
As for the room, yes, the A/C unit was not controllable and came out of the wall, instead of one by the window. It was old and clanged in the night (which didn't bother me because I need noise to sleep but may bother others). Carpeting did look older. We requested a refridgerator (free) but it was not brought up until we got back from touring several hours after checking in (had to make a second call to get it). My only other complaint would be no fan in the bathroom, to prevent the window from steaming up!
I had asked for a quiet room away from the atrium and pool and this request was granted. I asked for a view of Penn's Landing bridge over the phone and was told there was a year waiting list for this! We stayed on the 4th floor but they did not tell us about the breakfast/cocktail hour that I guess based on reading the other posts comes with it! There was a bottle of free water inside. We instead walked up to the diner that others here had suggested and it was OK. 5 blocks up (easy walk). The hotel breakfast is combined with a cocktail hour and is $30 a person, which we said "no thanks" to! I had read horror stories about the chlorine smell of the 4th floor but it was not that bad. Could not smell it in the room.
They did have a concierge, who was friendly enough, but did not know that Independence Hall was open later 4th of July week with no timed tickets needed! I knew more than he did about that after doing research online.
The front desk staff was friendly. I would DEFINITELY recommend this hotel, for its wonderful location. It was very peaceful and in a good location. The blocks are small, so when one says that the Liberty Bell is only 6 blocks away, it is an easier walk than you would think. I would definitely stay here again and would like to book a trip next year!
