First, the good. The hotel is very pretty, with a period theme, and nicely situated on the edge of Chinatown and within walking distance of little Italy and the East Village. The staff was very attentive and my stay was very pleasant. Continental breakfast was enjoyable, and the overall atmosphere was very positive.
Now, the bad. I travelled on business and booked the hotel for myself and two other guests (in separate rooms) based on the somewhat affordable room rates ($365/night). While we were told that cancellation of our reservation must be made 72-hours in advance, we were not notified that if our stays ended early that we would be charged 100% of the room rentals for the remaining nights. Consequently, when our business concluded early, we were forced to pay an amount roughty 1/3 more than what the cost of the stay should have been. This has not been our experience with large NY hotels that host business travellers. The manager, who was very nice up to that point, refused to compromise, and it is unlikely that we will stay at the hotel again or recommend it to other travelers (in fact, given the personal attention of the manager/owner, based upon this review, we will probably not be invited back to the hotel).

I would like to thank HaveLawWillTravel for his complementary remarks about the Blue Moon Hotel. We regret that he and his colleagues chose to leave us early. Had they made their modifications 72 hours prior to arrival, as they were notified in their confirmation, neither their company nor the Blue Moon would have suffered a loss. Had they stayed, they would have had a better opportunity to experience the many pleasures our hotel has to offer. I believe they would have come to understand that we are in no way a theme hotel. The Blue Moon is the realization of a five year art preservation and design project dedicated to the restoration of the historic and cultural heritage of the building. The hotel features woodwork, tiles, and marble from the original building, as well as hundreds of artifacts – all of which have been reintegrated with choice contemporary materials in a period-appropriate style which reflects the era of the building. The tenants and anonymous merchants who once inhabited the building transcend time through their personal effects, including place setting cards, glassware, newspaper clippings, greenstamps, magazines – which were found during the building’s renovation and are lovingly displayed. Our luxuriously appointed rooms are among the largest in the city, from 300 to 700 square feet in size. 2/3 of the rooms are complete with terraces. Each room features historical details, custom fabrics, memorabilia, a queen-bed with a Sealy Palatial Crest Pillowtop mattress, a full luxury bath, a refrigerator/mini-bar, secretary desk, table & chairs, and iron & board. Each room also has its own thermostat for air conditioning and heat, free wireless internet, a flat screen television with DVD player and a safe.
As HaveLawWillTravel observes, our staff is cordial, knowledgeable, and accomplished. We welcome each guest with a complementary glass of wine and a pass to a local fitness center. We have vouchers that provide favorable rates at a nearby parking garage. We are always ready to assist our guests with expert directions for getting around town and informed recommendations for fine dining in our area. We are very flexible and accommodating with regard to our guests’ request for additional services. The extent and excellence of our facilities and service has been recognized via 27 major articles in domestic and international publications and a number of coveted awards. Recently National Geographic Traveler named us one of the “150 hotels to check into” in the Western Hemisphere.
We hope our prospective guests understand that they have booked a room at an exclusive, intimate hotel. Our policy is fully explained on our website and on the confirmations our guests receive. In addition, our General Manager came out of a busy meeting and personally reviewed the policy with HaveLawWillTravel: we do not overbook, so every reservation is guaranteed. When a guest books a room, it is held for the entire stay. Our policy is not draconian, and is in line with most major hotels. We are not a conglomeration. If bigger hotels which overbook by 10% can afford to pardon guests’ miscalculations and generally don't, then all the more so does the Blue Moon find it necessary to have guests who honor our policy.
Although we are saddened by HaveLawWillTravel’s review, we are in the hospitality business and always try our best to be cordial. Therefore, if he respects our policies he will be privy to the same standard of sincere and excellent service all our guests receive during their stay; we will be happy to welcome him again.
However, if HaveLawWillTravel can find a hotel like the Blue Moon, a labor of love, a Lower East Side icon, more like a museum than a hotel, with huge, well-appointed immaculate rooms, historical details, an impressive attention to art and design, oversized bi-lingual staff, complemented by concierge services, gym pass, free glass of wine, discounted parking, continental breakfast, free DVD lending library, then we wish him the best of luck.
Sincerely
Larry Mallory
