We spent 9 nights at the Resortquest Mahana in mid-June and had a great time! We booked through AAA and made sure to request a room higher up (to get an unobstructed ocean view) and one that was recently remodeled. Our unit was on the 10th floor but most floors are fine except for maybe the 4-6th floors where the palm fronds block the view. If you're interested in ocean views than the Mahana is the place for you as both buildings directly face the ocean and all units have ocean views. The livingroom and lanai have the views.
We were lucky our unit was remodeled - we saw another unit that had an open house and it was not as nice. Very basic white and a little used looking (but had that great view). So make sure to request a remodeled unit.
The staff at Mahana was nice and requests for additional shampoo, dishwasher detergent were easy. There were a few days that the timing of the cleaning of our unit was not the most convenient but if you're out all day, that shouldn't be a problem.
We stayed in a one bedroom unit with 2 young kids (under age 12) so the arrangement of the sofabed worked well. Our kids were fine with the small pool and hot tub here. Older kids might want more action which is close by at the Resortquest Kaanapali Shore, just 2 resorts north. You could probably walk on the beach to this other resort and use their very large pools with waterfalls. Also you can go there to get a drink and listen to music as the Mahana does not have any of these amenities. We used the very clean bbq grills several times and it made for a quick dinner with little clean up. The grill area is nice with a sink and counter area behind.
One warning about the Mahana is the tradewinds which were more breezy than I liked. Our kids still loved getting in the pool and didn't care but I didn't really like lounging by the poolside with all the wind. It seems less windy farther south by the main area of Kaanapali.
The Mahana is a quiet resort and that's what we wanted. If you want more and don't mind walking or a short drive, there's always the Resortquest Kaanapali or southward, the whole Kaanapali Shores complex to get your fix. But if you want that action where you stay, than the Mahana might not be for you.
Also onsite at the Mahana is an Expedia agency where we booked a boat trip to Lanai (through Pacific Whale Foundation) and a luau at the Royal Lahaina. The luau was better than expected but the boat trip was really rocky. The boat staff was really great though and very helpful as my son got really seasick. I would recommend both activities.
Good places to eat in Lahaina -
Lahaina Mai-Tai Lounge, right on the water
Lahaina Grille and Oyster Bay
Different place to check out -
Makawao Town, cool little town with shops
Also stock up at Costco before going to your condo. It's on the way from the airport. Although Safeway is pretty close (about a 10 minute drive) so that's convenient enough.
We would definitely stay at the Mahana again!
