The hotel is located between Tropicana and The Hilton casinos which are within walking distance. and a very short walk to the Boardwalk. The rooms are located beginning on the second floor.
The hotel itself is an older hotel but the refurbishments made the stay mroe confortable. The swimming pool is under construction but the hotel has made arrangements with the Boardwalk Holiday Inn next door (located closer to the Boardwalk on Chelsea) to use their swimming pool facilities. The Holiday Inn pool is outdoors and has plenty of room for sun-bathing.
The room itself was very clean and refurbished. My room faced Chelsea St and there wasn't any problems with noise or traffic outside my window. All of their rooms are accessed from within the building rather than an outdoor access like motels, so I was comfortable with the security.
The stop for the shuttle, which runs up and down Pacific Ave and will take you to all of the casinos, is right outside the front door (cost 2 dollars and run every 10 minutes).
Eating facilities - none - but you can easily go to the Boardwalk or go to either Tropicana or The Hilton. The Holiday Inn does have a nice cafe but it was closed during my visit.
If you have need for any sundries, there is a drug store and a 7-11 around the corner on Atlantic Ave.

Ignore the snobby reviews you see here; this place isn't nearly as bad as its made out to be. Yes, the pool is drained and unsightly, and the elevators are old and slow, but you can't beat the price for such a great location. The service was excellent, the staff was extremely friendly, and the room was exceptionally clean and smelled fresh. All in all, I had an excellent experience, and would stay at the HoJo again.

“Worst hotel ever”

This is by far the worst hotel I have ever had the misfortune to visit. The room was dirty and smelled like mold. The hallway carpet was worn and dirty. The "pool" is empty of water, but full of trash. Stay away!

This place was so bad, it was almost comical. My friend and I only booked one night (thank god) because if we were going to stay longer we definately would hvae gone someone else. I figured since it was $200/night it wouldn't be so bad. Well, I was WRONG WRONG WRONG.

There was no shower head so the water just came out of a pipe in the wall. I wore flip flops in the shower because I felt like I would get some sort of disease from this place. It didn't help because the bathtub was clogged up and it filled up with water anyway while I was taking a shower. My friend thought she was feeling bed bugs the whole night. She said she couldn't sleep because she was so grossed out. The hallway outside our room had debri scattered around everywhere (looked like they were attempting to do some re-modeling). Walking down the hallway, we had a beautiful view of the EMPTY swimming pool. This place was really awful. We had to laugh because it was THAT bad. Spend the extra 50-100 bucks a night and go somewhere else.

I was looking for a place in Atlantic City at a decent price on a weekend in May. The only thing that met my expectations was the price. When I looked at the picture of the Howard Johnson's room on Interner, I thought it was not so bad. However, when we got into the room, we realized that the picture that you see on Internet has nothing do to with the room that we stayed in. This hotel is very old and has not been renovated. When you enter the lobby, you can see that the carpet are dirty and need to cleaned or even changed. When you enter the elevator, it is not very reassuring. The bathroom was clean and we thought the bed were too. However one on the person I was travellling with came back with bugbed bites. I will never stay in this hotel anymore, and I would not recommend it to anyone. The place was also very noisy. At night we could hear a group of young people having a party and in the morning you could hear kids running and crying in the corridor. If you want to travel cheap, it is probably better to stay in Pleasantville and Absecon in a hotel that would be more comfortable.
