In 24 years of traveling throughout western and central Europe, I have never stayed in a finer 3 star, family run hotel. It is now the standard by which I will judge all other 3 star hotels.
In reading reviews on Tripadvisor I find the negative things people write to be the most informative. Let me tell you my two complaints (if you can really call them that): the floor boards creaked on my side of the bed, but I soon ignored that and the air conditioning in the room (number 36) would take a little longer to cycle on than I liked, but when it did the room was quite comfortable. Air conditioning is apparently only available in the rooms on the street and is obviously there because there can be considerable street noise. The excellent windows, however, cut-off 95 percent of the sound. We, the delightful Mrs. Gam and I, had requested an air condition room because we were in Munich during a rare heatwave. We slept very well.
Our room was large for a 3 star establishment. The furnishings were a study in European modern: sleak and efficient. The bathroom was far larger than many I've seen. I am a rather large individual (6'8" or just over two meters) and I felt far from cramped in the shower. The shower, in fact, had a built-in seat in it. Everything in the room and bathroom was immaculate. Actually, it seemed cleaner than immaculate, if that's possible.
The breakfast they serve is absolutely stunning. There was a huge selection of breads, rolls, pastries, fresh fruit, 6 or more types of coldcut meats and sausages, at least 8 or more different kinds of cheeses, several kinds of salads, smoked salmon and/or white fish, soft boiled eggs, dried cereals, several varieties of yogurt, rice pudding, wheat pudding, chocolate pudding, five kinds of juices and, of course, butter and jelly. All of the food was carefully displayed on the serving table. It was also apparent from looking at the breakfast that the hotel did not sacrifice quality in giving such quantity. There was nothing cheap looking about this breakfast. The most memorable thing about the breakfast, however, was the big smile on the face of the young woman who served us. This woman was consistently pleasant and welcoming whether you walked in at 8 a.m. or just before breakfast ended at 10:00. She was quick with a "good morning" and to ask if we wanted coffee or tea. She was obviously a person who took pride in her job, which was making the guests feel at home and welcome.
Actually, all of the staff at the Jedermann were wonderful, either answering question, booking sightseeing trips or giving public transit advice. The public transit system in Munich is outstanding and Jedermann's access to it could not be better: the 18 and 19 trams stop litterally outside the front door. The trams scheduled is printed at the stop so it is possible to time your departure so there will be little or no waiting. The hotel also sells transit tickets, at cost. The transit system has a wide variety of tickets, and the desk staff helped us buy the ones that were most economical for what we wanted to do.
Some other reviewers have said that the neighborhood around the Jedermann is "dinghy" or otherwise undesirable. I do not know where these people might have been because the area was perfectly fine. Mrs. Gam, whose business trip this was, walked around the neighborhood alone and never felt unsafe. There is a huge office complex down the street which is the new home of the European Patent Office, the agency Mrs. Gam was visiting. Also down the block is a great beer hall: the Augustiner Braustuben. I am adding some photos of the neighborhood to this review so you can judge for yourself .
I don't know what more I can say. If you are the kind of person who likes the corporate cocoon of a Holiday Inn or a Hilton, maybe you should look elsewhere. If, however, you want to stay in a real place, run by real people, go to the Jedermann. As I said at the begining of this far too long review, the Jedermann is now my standard as to what a 3 star, family run hotel can be. The other 3 star hotels of Europe have a lot to aspire to.
Your "for once, absolutely satisfied" pal,
