We changed our plans a bit due to a small storm near Holbox on the weekend of August 30 and 31st. We were planning on spending first couple of days on Holbox and then onto Cozumel. But we decided to head on over to Cozumel upon arrival in Cancun. Nice easy bag drag and started the first of 7 days of diving on Saturday the 30th. Gustav stayed away well enough and we had a great week of diving. Port was closed on Sunday morning to small boats but the gang at Scuba Mau found us a large boat and diving we went.
SAw several nurse sharks during the week. A couple of small black tip reef sharks and a very large almost white turtle. We hit Cedral 3 times during the week and saw this big fellow every time. Spotted Eagle came crusing by one day. Lots of large groupers and parrot fish were around all week as well. The deep sites were great and did lots of swim throughs.
One of the most memorable sites was 3 large lobsters out in the wide open (on the sandy bottom between 2 reefs) playing, sparring or whatever. I think the girl was trying to round up a couple of males for some fun. The vis was good all week and the currents varied from mild to a little swift. Great diving all week with Pumba, Monkey and Gabi Loco from Scuba Mau Cozumel. Thanks to Opal and Mau for a great week of diving.
Made our venture to the other side to Coconuts for a late lunch one afternoon and then onto the beach at Mezcalitos and met some very nice folks from the DC area. If you have a Coconuts t-shirt, wear it to Coconuts. It got me a couple of free cervesas.
As usual all meals were great. El Pique, Los Ostates, Los Morena, Tony Rome's, Rendez Blue to name a few.
Friday afternoon Angie and I, Tom and Jackie from New York and Opal and Mau form Cozumel ventured over to Isla Mujeres and did a whale shark swim on Saturday. We chartered the boat for just us 6 till the next morning when we were asked if one more person (a girl from Australia) could join us. No problem. The trip was awesome. We got to do 6 or 7 swims and 4 of them were just the best. The last swim I started right on top and at the head of what had to be a 35-40 foot whaleshark. And so close that if I had wanted to touch I could have. Probably a 30 to 40 second swim before his or her tail swished right by my head. And then it turned around and pased under us again. Did not get any pictures as I wanted to concentrate on seeing all I could of these huge fish. And the seas were a little rough. (5-6 foot swells) On the way back we actually got a treat and were able to stop on the island of Contoy and mingle with local fisherman as they were having a party. (I believe once a year the island is opened up for this celebration) Then on for a little snorkling at the other end of Contoy. The seas got rougher on the ride in as we encountered what I would consider a squall. Overall the whale shark tour was great.
We found 3 great places to eat (Rolandi's, Renee and Renea, and another place that was closing as we approached, hungry and about 9 or 10 at night. They invited us in and the service and food was great) We spent Saturday night on the island as well since we were flying out of Cancun on Sunday morning. Easy trip to the aeropuerto and nice flight home to the Atlanta airport via FLL on Spirit airlines.
Another great trip !!!!
