It is my 5th night in Puerto Rico and I feel as if I finally found what I was looking for. A place for serentiy, where you are treated as a guest and not another tourist/customer.
We visited my in-laws in Aguadilla for 3 days and then drove to Rincon and stayed at the Rincon Beach Resort, which by the way was very nice, however my vacation dream came true as my wife began to turn into the driveway of a hidden gem in the middle of a very small town called Patillas. It's well off of the beat and path so if you are planning to do a lot in the city of San Juan, you might want to think again about staying here, but if you have a 2 to 3 days to have a vacation within your vacation I would highly recommend the Sunrise Beach Inn and Spa. The small hotel is probably a good hour or so away from San Juan, but coming from So. Cal, that is typical commuter travel.
We were greeted by the owner at the gate in the front of the property. Their is about an acre of property with 7 bungalows and the place is secured by a tall fence and automatic gate for entry/exit. It's small enough to know if someone is coming or going.
The property is on the beach and has a pool and spa along with hanging hammocks outside of most of the bungalows. The bungalow we stayed in is "Bali" (they all have themes) and they chose to place us in Bali because of our two daughters ( 2 and 6 yrs old.). Bali has the largest bedroom of the bungalows from what the owner explained to us. They inflated an air mattress and placed it on the floor of the bedroom for the girls along with sheets, pillows and blankets. The bedroom was seperated from the living room and there is also a seperate full kitchen area with a full sized refrigerator, oven , and microwave.
If you arrive prior to about 6PM , let the owner know you will be arriving and you would like to have dinner at the Inn, they will cook a wonderful meal for you onsite. The food was terrific and this is coming from a very picky eater that hadnt had a really good meal since arriving in Puerto Rico. The owners have an assortment of local- seasonal fresh fruit, herbs, and vegetables that they use to prepare meals for vacationers, but you have to let them know early so that they can prepare enough for everyone. We were the only family eating the night we arrived and it was wonderful!!
Dinner and appetizers were served outside with a beautiful view of the ocean only ten yards away. We had a wonderful white wine with our chicken and a mixed drink, w/Puerto Rican Rum, made out of the fresh mangos from the yard. to go along with the appetizers. The owners sat and ate with my family, at a seperate table for privacy, but provided a charming bit of conversation/company.
My six year old took a painting class and my wife had a massage. The owners have a handful of local vendors that they contract with to provide many of the additional services, such as massages and craft making. I was out in the water doing a little snorkeling. Their is snorkeling gear and shoes under the gazebo if you need to borrow it. There are rocks at the beach so I would recommend bringing shoes for the water.
This place is a romantic or serene getaway and I would recommend it to anyone, but I wouldnt necessarily bring the teenagers or the tweens because they probably wont find enough in the way of high energy activities to keep them busy, like jet skiing. Children under 10 will generally be okay, but keep in mind that they might not find many peers to play with here. It can be fun for the family, but it's not a family focused establishment.
Overall, I couldnt be happier about our choice to stay at the Sunrise Beach Inn and Spa and the next time I come to Puerto Rico, this will be the first place I think about staying. Good luck!!
