My wife, myself and our daughter (18 mo) were supposed to go to Turks and Caicos but because of the rough hurricane season earlier in the month, they closed the resort and rebooked us to Negril. So we did not purposefully go to Negril and were still a little disappointed to not be in Turks and Caicos since we had been dreaming of that resort for a good 7 months. I will get the travel issues out of the way right of the bat, because they aren't really a negative, just for our situation it was less than ideal. One of the main reasons we booked to Turks and Caicos origionally was because the resort is only 15 minutes from the airport. Traveling with an 18 month old on a 4 hour flight, and the trying to have her sit still for an additional 80 minute bus ride was a bit much. Again, we new that ahead of time, but just make sure you set your expectations as well as those of your kids to make sure they have plenty to occupy them.
Now for the Resort. First let me start by saying the staff at this resort is top notch. I used to travel significantly for former jobs as a consultant and spent a lot of time in a lot of very nice hotels. That being said, the level of service from this resort was among the best. Always friendly, accomodating and sweet beyond expectations with our 18m old daughter. The waitresses even went so far as to pick her up and carry her around for a good 10 minutes, which provided on of the only chances my wife and I got to eat together and the staff at the nursery/day care was superb. They eliminate all your worries pretty quickly, in fact the second time we brought our daughter in, she actually walked right up to one of the ladies and asked her to pick her up, and of course they remembered her name which is an important touch.
We stayed in a Luxury King Oceanview room. The room was very clean and the bed was comfortable enough. I recall it being very comfortable the first couple nights and then progressively getting less comfortable each night. Decent size balcony and bath area as well. The one negative, and this was huge for us, is that for being such a kid/baby friendly place there was not a place to put my daughter's crib. This create us having to basically go to sleep when she did, to avoid waking her. Again, just know what to expect, in the future this is a deal breaker for us, we will either suck up the costs and book a suite (to make sure we have a seperate room to put her in) or go elsewhere. If you have older kids it probably isn't an issue. For us, she went to bed at 8pm, so we could either sit on the balcony (without drinks or food) and get bit by mosquitos or go inside. We tried twice to sit out, it lasted about 25 minutes each, and then wound up inside nice and early :(
The food was okay. The Italian restaurant was closed because it was offseason. Kimonos was good but small portions. Our favorite place was the Tex Mex place which had good ribs, and decent appetizers. We ate breakfast every morning at the only place you can which is buffet style. I was not a fan, the pastries are okay, but the eggs aren't good and the french toast was down right bad. Poolside lunch of Pizza and Jamacian patties are good and self serve (so easily accessible). Dinner at the buffet was not a buffet, since it was offseason you had to order from the menu. We only did that twice, once did not like it at all, and the other time was okay. We also did eat once at the adult only place and I had the portions were absurdly small (my "lobster" was the size of a crayfish). All and all the food was okay, not a lot of choices and not available all the time.
Drinks are free flowing and easy to get. A bar was always open, without much of a wait.
The night shows at the Big Top with the Sesame Street characters were worth the trip. My daughter loved everyone of them, and it looked like all of the kids were smiling from ear to ear. The Beach was beautiful, clean and always towels and chairs accessible. The pool was nice, the lazy river was fun (faster than the name implies). The weather was hot and humid (even at night).
I think that sums it up. I think this would be a great vacation for anyone with kids older than 18 months. Our daughter was a little to young to enjoy everything including eating a meal that lasted longer than 10 minutes. We met a lot of nice people, and those with kids under 18 months all had the same difficulty, but that is really just what a vacation with your young children is like regardless of where you go. I would absolutely go back, when my daughter is older.
