We stayed at the Mambo from 23 sept till 7th Oct. Had a great outbound flight with Thomson, arrived mid afternoon so didn't feel like we'd missed the first day. Having previously stayed at the Merengue next door we knew what to expect and we were not dissappointed. We had two fantastic relaxing weeks. The weather was very hot and sunny, beware people were ending up in hospital after using low factor sun block on the beach! the sun index is 10+.The hotel shop is very very expensive, buy cigarettes from your departure airport in the uk, or on the plane. Also bring bite creams, etc from the uk, I paid £7 in their shop! The rooms are large and clean but the air con is almost useless. The ceiling fan is a god send. The food was very nice but the restaurant is very hot, no aircon and a lot of the cooking is done in the centre on food stations. The staff throughout the resort are friendly helpful and efficient. he cleaning staff work non stop, with plenty of hand gel. We had no sickness or other tummy upsets at all.The animacion team are such fun and work long and hard for you. Their shows are hilarious. We didn't like the dancers that were brought in but thats personal preference. There was always something going on round the pool and on the beach, if you dont want to join in there is no pressure. Drinks are very easy to get, no queuing for ages! Try the 151 rum in a pina colada, lovely. Sometimes we didn't get to the pool till after 10 am but could always find a choice of sunbeds. There are always plenty on the beach too, and the breeze is very welcome. Shopping in the shops on the beach was a bit like running the gauntlet, but if you are firm there were amazing bargains to be had. Try Sergio in hut #4. I got some lovely paintings for less than half the price of caribbean street. We took a cab into Puerto Plata, the guide stayed with us for our whole trip, he took us into a cigar factory and a couple of jewellery shops but they were very expensive. When we insisted on being taken somewhere cheaper it was fine. The return journey with the cab and guide was $35 for 4 people. Excellent value.Find him in reception early in the morning. The trips through the rep were very expensive, try the tour guy by the shops on Mambo beach for less than half the price!
The casino was fun for the slots but we never saw one person win at blackjack!! Pascha nightclub was very loud, but if you ask the dj he will play whatever music you ask for, the air con in there is very good and the drinks are excellent.Samuel the bar tender is very good, he remembers everyones drinks!!
Last time we went we booked the airport vip lounge on the way home, but this time found we didn't need to, the seating is now comfortable, with air con and a bar where you can smoke.
This holiday cost us £50 per person per day. I don't think we would get anything like this anywhere else for so little. There was nothing we could complain about. I would go back tomorrow.
