I will start by saying I had low expectations. Several of the recent reviews were scary to say the least (regarding theft, food, accomodations,) but I will honestly say I have no idea what these people were talking about. No, it's not a 5 star resort... (they plan to upgrade and become one by November) but they never claimed to be.
For what you pay (for even an ocean-front room) it was just right. Yes, they could use new curtains and bedspreads -- yes, the faucets drip -- yes, thing smell a little moldy -- but you're just in the room to sleep. The beds are comfortable and the shower pressure/water is nice and hot.
The buffet food is above average. There were just two items (out of about 20 things to pick from every meal) that weren't that great. The drinks are always pouring and the sun is always shinning. The people (staff) are always smiling. Sure, there were some language barriers and everything runs on "DR time" but you are on VACATION and you have to understand that things move slower there.
I went with three girlfriends for 4 nights (we're from NYC) and we had a blast. Hopefully the upgrades due to come by the Fall will help in the "comfort area" but there's something nice about how simple things are there. Hopefully things won't become too commercial and over-populated (aka Costa Rica) because it's nice that there is so much open space there now.
The theft thing was a big concern (as per other reviews) but we didn't use the room safes. We carried everything with us and had NO problems. Also, they have purified water containers all over the resort so you can fill water bottles with good water at all times. NO ONE got sick.
Also the waterfall excursion is amazing. Half the trip is climbing up waterfalls then sliding down them -- then you tour a town's market and a home of one of the locals. It was a beautiful way to spend a day touring and experiencing part of Puerto Plata.
Final note: I WILL DEFINITELY BE GOING BACK.
