This is the second time i've stopped here on business(so not out of choice)
I was in room 414 which doesn't have wood lice and split wood panels from rot unlike the last time. But if I wanted a shower I got a bath too and if I wanted a bath- yeah, you got it I got a shower!

Water was cool or cold unless you ran it at some silly hour(5am) or on a sunday- The hotel was jam packed and the water heater could not cope with demand come 8am or 5:30-9:00 pm.

None of the staff speak any english- even the reception staff avoid serving english speaking customers in preference of locals or spanish speaking as they seem to get embarressed or just dont like it. My delegation travel the world and to 3 other locations in DR and do not encounter such language problems. 35 minutes to pay my $13 room bill whilst others came and went paid difficult amounts with credit cards/vouchers/cash/foreign currency- however myself paying $13 dollars not wanting any change took 35 minutes!!

Avoid this hotel at all costs- Use the renaisance down the road. Popped in thinking it still had a lively bar(which is now a casino) and the hotel staff sat all 5 of us down found out what we were looking for and sent us to the best club i've ever been in.

Don't get me wrong, I am not one of these people who expect someone to speak MY language where ever I go, but these people don't make any effort, forget that they understood that same word 2 days prior- but when they are being "awkward" do not understand you all of a sudden!

top tip:-
Go to Praia- a club about 25 minutes from the intercontinental quite pricey- enterence about £5-8 drinks comparable to "london" prices - so OK but a bit unexpected being in the caribbean. Best club ever!

My husband and I traveled to Santo Domingo for 5 days for a romantic getaway. Upon our departure the airlines were having difficulties and had to cancel some flights our flight was one that got cancelled. We were put up in the Embassy Suites for a night and rebooked on another flight for the following day. That flight too got cancelled which caused us to be put up in the hotel again by the airlines. The airlines chose this hotel and I wished they had not. When we tried to check-in we were told that they could not find the reservations. Miraculously once a Spanish speaking individual who was on the canceled flight with us came in to the hotel, they were able to find the reservation. We were being put up in the hotel for 2 nights awaiting the 1st available flight back to the states. The hotel told us they were only going to give us a room for one night because both hotel vouchers had the same date. We were so disgusted we spent the night and checked out 1st thing in the morning and went back to the airport and had them to put us back at the Embassy Suites until we could leave. This hotel is rated a 5 star but have no clue as to customer service I would give them a 0. Very rude staff!!!!!

This is not up to the quality I would expect from Intercontinental.

It is in need of an update.

The tub and shower both ran whenever the water was turned on.

It was noisy and had prostititues propositioning customers on hotel property.

It was also carrying pirate signals on their TV's. DR is Latin America, yet they carried ABC, CBS, and NBC. Nice to have but illegal. I am in that business and really would not expect a reputable company to buy stolen signals.

Frankly this place is an embarrasment to the brand.

It is clean enough, lots of security, sufficient for the job, but not a nice experience.

“Not a five-star experience.”

I stayed at the Hotel Intercontinental January 27-30, 2008. I've stayed at Intercontinental Hotels before and perhaps that is why I expected a lot from this property. While it was not a five-star experience, by any stretch of the imagination, it was not a bad place to stay.

My check-in and check-out were slow. It was a bit difficult to know exactly what took so long, but it took longer than an average check-in, -out. Perhaps 15 minutes or so for each.

My room was fine, not what I expected, but it was clean (although it had a pervasive smell that I think was supposed to cover up the mustiness). Leaving the window open helped (I was very happy I could open the window).

The view from my room was beautiful. I overlooked the street and Caribbean Ocean. Very nice!

The desk in the room was big and accomodated my needs. The TV had a number of English-language stations which I apprecaited, and the bathroom was clean and spacious. The bed, however, appeared to be uneven and I felt myself rolling to the left all night as I slept. It was also a little hard for my tastes.

Breakfast was okay, but nothing special. I got an omelette the second day which would've been nice the first, but there was no one on hand to cook one for me. The melon juice is awesome, especially when combined with orange juice.

I ate dinner in the Brasserie once and while it was not fru-fru, it was good. My dining companion had lamb chops which he said were very good. I had a steak with chimmichurra sauce that tasted out of this world.

I ate dinner in the bar one evening. There is only one bartender/server, so sometimes Ihad to wait a while. I ordered a sode, and two appetizers for dinner. Because one came from the kitchen, and he had to wait, the bartender didn't bring anything out for the 20 minutes he was waiting for the 2nd appetizer. I finally asked him to at least bring me my soda. I have to say that the ham and cheese appetizer was wonderful and I wish I would have had a reason to eat there again because it was incredible.

The bartender remembered me the second night and my service improved that night, I think, because he did remember me.

I did not try the pool or fitness area.

The ATM in the lobby wouldn't give me money, but when I used the ATM in the attached casino, I got money. At least I got some!

All in all, my stay at the Intercontinental wasn't what I expected from a hotel chain with its reputation, but it wasn't the worst place I've ever stayed either.
