We took a tour for Haleakala sunrise. It's cold and have to leave early in the morning but it's definitly worth it. more
My wife and I camped out at the hosmers grove camping site at the base of the park (elevation of around 5000 feet) so we went up for both the sunset and the sunrise. If we have to pick which was better, without a doubt we woud say the sunset. For the first time in my life I understood what... more
Is the sunrise worth it?... Yes if you want to see a sunrise you'll never see without hiking a mountain! It is an early morning trek and depending on where on the island you are on... it may mean getting up at 2 am! But who can see the sun burst out of a sea of puffy clouds? You can... more
Do go early for the sunrise and do wear tons of layers it's VERY cold. We didn't do the "must bike down" we took the rental up and it was a great idea. We spent time up there, hiking around and enjoying being above the clouds. Bring lots of water and walk slow due to elevation changes. The bike riders... more
We chose to go see the sunrise with Ekahi Sunrise tours. If you are going to do this trip, I would advise going with a tour because the road to the sumit is very steep and curvy expecially when it is dark and so early in the morning. We took the tour the second day we arrived on Maui which... more

Throughout my 3 day get away from Honolulu, my visit to the Haleakala Crater was the highlight of my vacation. You can't see any view like this in Honolulu, or pretty much anywhere else. Since it's 10,000 feet in the air, the crater looks like another world and the 40 degree air makes you forget you're in paradise. The almost... more
After spending many days at the beach we headed to Haleakala Crater for a change of pace. The temperature was chilly in the early a.m. but it gave us the jolt we needed for the hike down the Sliding Sands trail. With the swirling clouds and red-orange craters, it was otherworldly. Wear good shoes, not flipflops because the trail is... more
The scene is really nice, but not worth getting up at 2am on your vacation. You can get this view if you fly early in the morning and watch out the window. The sunsets in Hawaii are much more scenic, too. more
I was born and raised on Maui and have only hiked and camped in the crater for the first time last month. I wanted to write this review because I think it's important for people to know that if you're going to hike down the Sliding Sands trail, make sure you have enough time and energy to hike back down.... more
